Spring into Wellness: Detoxing and Cleansing

Renée Naturally Qualified Naturopath, Nutritionist & Western Medical Herbalist

Spring is here, and with it, the natural urge to refresh, reset, and renew. But before you hop into the latest detox craze or find yourself googling “juice cleanse packs near me,” let’s clear up some common questions: Are detox diets safe? Will I be surviving on lemon juice and air? And most importantly—will I really notice results? Let’s debunk the fads and get you on track for a revitalising, sustainable reset.

These are all fair and wise questions to ask before considering ‘going on a cleanse’ as there are both beneficial and detrimental cleanse programs available to us, and the key to discerning what is going to provide sustainable results is being educated on what constitutes a healthy addition to our own wellbeing regime. Choosing the right cleanse for you can absolutely mean you are on track to kick-start your health journey and enjoy wholesome food along the way.

The concepts of internal cleansing and detoxification have been around for centuries and although carried out in different manners over time and traditions, the importance of detoxifying the body has long been regarded as beneficial. In modern times, the importance of cleansing has become even more paramount as our bodies are bombarded with toxic substances everywhere – in the air we breathe, the food we eat, and the water we drink. Even our own body and the bacteria in our intestines produce toxic substances.

Whilst our body is designed to handle exposure to a certain amount of toxins by processing and eliminating them readily, it is the ongoing and excessive exposure that modern daily living subjects us to that can greatly compromise our health. These toxins build up in the tissues (typically our fat stores) and can damage the body in a cumulative way, wreaking havoc on our normal metabolic processes. In time, this weakens our immune system and can lead to the development of many common health ailments, including; allergies, colds, acne, headaches, anxiety, depression, hay fever and, most commonly, weight gain and fatigue.

Different Types of Cleanses to Consider:

Whole Foods Cleanse
Perfect for beginners, this gentle cleanse focuses on eating whole, unprocessed foods to nourish the body while helping it detox naturally. Think colourful vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, and healthy fats like avocados and nuts. Avoid common triggers like dairy, gluten, alcohol, caffeine, and sugar, and you’ll give your body a break from inflammation and toxins. This type of cleansing is easy to facilitate and can help to support digestion, energy levels, and mental clarity without leaving you feeling deprived.

Juice Cleanse
This option has gained popularity, and while it’s tempting to jump on board, be mindful of your own body’s needs and what level of output you need to be doing in your daily life. A juice cleanse typically involves consuming only fruit and vegetable juices for a few days or up to a week. Doing a juice cleanse is believed to give your digestive system a break. When done properly (with fresh, organic ingredients and the right balance of nutrients), it can flood your system with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. However, be cautious of longer or extreme versions (hello, the aforementioned lemon detox diet!), which can leave you feeling depleted rather than rejuvenated if not well-managed.

Intermittent Fasting
A more structured approach to detoxing, intermittent fasting alternates between periods of eating and fasting. There are various methods—such as the 16:8 or 5:2 approach—that are said to help regulate blood sugar, improve digestion, and enhance the body’s natural detoxification pathways. This type of cleanse can help reduce bloating, improve mental focus, balance hormones and can even encourage fat loss, all while letting your body repair itself during fasting windows.

Herbal Cleanses
A more targeted detox, herbal cleanses focus on supporting key organs of detoxification—like the liver, kidneys, and colon—with natural herbs. Milk thistle, dandelion root, burdock, and turmeric are examples of herbs used to promote liver detoxification and encourage toxin elimination. A herbal cleanse can be incorporated into a whole foods diet or used as an additional boost. Just be sure to seek guidance from a qualified naturopath, nutritionist or herbalist to ensure it’s the right fit for you.

A safe and effective cleanse should leave you feeling lighter, more energised, and with clearer skin and sharper mental clarity. I believe a whole foods-based cleanse or as I like to call it, “a gentle reset”, like the ones mentioned above, is the best way to stimulate your metabolic rate and teach you healthy eating habits to carry forward. Look for a program that includes plenty of hydration, and essential nutrients and supports your body’s natural detoxification processes without going to extremes.

An easy-to-access rational at-home approach to aiding the body’s detoxification could involve;

  • Eating a diet that focuses on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds
  • Eating only fresh, natural ingredients that contain no preservatives or additives
  • Adopting a healthy lifestyle, including avoidance of alcohol, red meat, dairy, caffeine and wheat
  • Exercising regularly
  • Taking a high-potency multi-vitamin and mineral supplement
  • Ensuring controlled portion sizes to avoid over-eating, which places consequent stress on your digestive system and detoxification organs
  • Staying hydrated with 2-3 litres of filtered water daily

Incorporating a safe and effective detox program into your health regime acts like a ‘reset’ button for your body. The right cleanse program should also teach you how to adopt healthy eating habits and how to break bad ones. A cleanse is like hitting “refresh” on your health, recharging your energy, and clearing out the build-up of toxins that may have been building up over winter hibernation (with one too many Netflix binge sessions on the couch!). Summer, we’re coming for you, fully charged!
