Baked Feta with Honey and Sesame

I know I’m not alone in thinking that sharing cheese in good company is one of life’s greatest pleasures. And when you take it up a notch in winter by warming it in the oven? Delightful. Dress it up a little fancy for some flavour flair, and it’s next level.

This dish hits all the spots cheese should. Creamy, salty + golden. And just when you think it couldn’t get better, in comes honey and sesame with their sweet, lightly crunchy charm. A few herbs for good measure add some green to counterbalance all that cheesy goodness. OK, let’s be honest…they’re mostly there for flavour and colour. This one’s not exactly oozing green goddess energy. But serve it with a rocket salad and you’ve got a match made in cheesy heaven. Or just dive in with crusty bread, straight from the dish. Zero judgement.

Nutrition Bite

Feta is naturally lower in fat than many cheeses and provides a good dose of calcium for strong bones. It also contains probiotics, which can support gut health. Feta offers a source of protein for steady energy and satiety, along with B vitamins that help the body convert food into fuel. Paired with honey and herbs, it’s both nourishing and delicious.

Ingredients

  • 200g block feta cheese
  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 teaspoons runny honey (plus extra for drizzling)
  • 1 teaspoon white sesame seeds
  • 1 teaspoon black sesame seeds
  • ¼ teaspoon chill flakes
  • A few sprigs fresh thyme or oregano leaves, roughly chopped
  • Warm pita bread, crackers, or crusty sourdough, to serve

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 180°C
  2. Place the block of feta in a small ovenproof dish. Drizzle the olive oil and 1½ teaspoons of honey evenly over the top.
  3. Sprinkle the sesame seeds and chilli flakes over the feta, then scatter the chopped herbs on top.
  4. Bake for 18 minutes, until the feta is soft and just starting to turn golden at the edges.
  5. Remove from the oven and drizzle with the remaining honey for a glossy, sweet finish. Add an extra drizzle of olive oil, if desired.
  6. Serve warm with your choice of bread or crackers and a simple green salad on the side to balance the richness.
