GLP-1, or glucagon-like peptide-1, has become one of the most talked-about hormones in health and nutrition. Prescription medications such as semaglutide and tirzepatide, have brought GLP-1 into the spotlight by transforming the treatment of type 2 diabetes and obesity. However, this remarkable hormone has always played an essential role in our body, regulating appetite, blood sugar and digestion. Understanding how your body’s own GLP-1 works—and how to support its natural production—can help you make informed choices about your metabolic health.

 

So, what exactly is GLP-1, and why is it so important?

GLP-1 is produced primarily by specialised cells in the small intestine after we eat, particularly in response to protein, healthy fats, and fibre-rich carbohydrates. Once released into the bloodstream, it acts as a messenger, coordinating communication between the gut, pancreas, stomach, and brain.

One of GLP-1’s most important roles is helping to regulate blood glucose levels. It travels to appetite-regulating centres in the brain, helping us to feel full after eating and telling the brain that you’ve had enough to eat. At the same time, it slows the rate at which food leaves the stomach, allowing nutrients to be absorbed more gradually and helping meals feel more satisfying. Together, these actions naturally reduce hunger between meals and may decrease overall calorie intake.1

GLP-1 medications work differently from the body’s naturally produced GLP-1. Rather than increasing your own GLP-1 production, these medicines are laboratory-made molecules designed to mimic or enhance the effects of GLP-1 while resisting rapid breakdown. This means they provide a continuous signal that reduces appetite, slows stomach emptying and improves blood sugar regulation. For many people living with obesity or type 2 diabetes, this can lead to significant weight loss and better glucose control.3

However, they may also cause side effects such as nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhoea, and loss of appetite, particularly during the early stages of treatment.4 They are prescription medicines that should be used under medical supervision and are not appropriate for everyone.

Supporting your body’s own GLP-1 production through nutrition and lifestyle offers a gentler, physiological approach to metabolic health. While natural GLP-1 levels will never reach the sustained levels achieved with medication, healthy eating patterns, regular exercise, quality sleep, and good gut health can all help optimise this important hormone’s activity. For many people, these strategies provide meaningful benefits for appetite regulation, blood sugar balance, and long-term wellbeing, whether or not medication is part of their healthcare plan.
