Men’s Health Week

Family Health Diary

It’s time to take action for the men we love—our brothers, dads, partners, mates, and ourselves. Men’s Health Week runs from 9–15 June 2025 here in Aotearoa—and this is the perfect time for Kiwi men to hit pause and ask: how’s your health looking?

Why Men’s Health Deserves Urgent Attention

Let’s look at the facts:

  • A boy born in NZ today is likely to live 4 years less than a girl born next door.
  • He’s 20% more likely to die of a heart attack, and 30% more likely to develop diabetes.
  • He’s 3x more likely to die by suicide or in a car crash.
  • 8 Kiwi families lose a man each day to a preventable illness.
  • Māori and Pasifika men have significantly shorter lifespans than other New Zealanders.
  • And shockingly, 1 in 4 Kiwi men won’t live to see retirement.

This Week, Take These Simple Steps:

  • Take the 2 minute “What’s Your Score?” quiz
  • Book a check-up with your GP
  • Move in a way that feels good — solo or with mates
  • Encourage a mate to book their check-up too

What’s Your Score?

A great place to start is the “What’s Your Score?” online quiz, designed just for New Zealand men.

  • Quick and easy – 15–20 questions on blood pressure, cholesterol, diet, exercise, mental health, prostate and more
  • It’s based on the well‑researched Foundation 49 One Minute Men’s Health Check
  • Your score gives a snapshot of which health areas are strong — and which need a bit more attention

It All Starts with One Appointment

Whether it’s been 12 months or 12 years since your last check-up, Men’s Health Week is the time to Book that GP appointment and ask for a check-up. Have a conversation about your health. Get referred to the right support services — and take the first step toward feeling better.

Movement is Medicine – Especially When It’s Shared

Once you’ve had your check-up, the next prescription might be movement. But “exercise” doesn’t have to mean hitting the gym or running a marathon.

It’s about moving in ways that work for you — walking with a mate, joining a local class, kicking a ball around, or simply getting outside more. Movement helps:

  • Lower your risk of chronic disease
  • Boost your mood, energy, and mental health
  • Build strength and independence
  • Connect you to others and keep you accountable

Men are more likely to stay active when they move together. That’s why community, support, and connection matter.

Men’s Health Week is more than a reminder — it’s a moment to act.

Take the quiz. See your GP. Get moving. Stay connected. Live well.
