Changes to Prescribing For ADHD

Family Health Diary

If you’ve ever tried to get an ADHD assessment in New Zealand, you’ll know the wait times can feel endless. But as of February 1, 2026, things are finally starting to shift. New regulations now allow GPs and nurse practitioners to diagnose ADHD and prescribe stimulant medications for adults — something only specialists could do before.

Why is This a Big Deal?

Health agencies like Medsafe and Pharmac have backed the change, saying it should make it faster and easier for people to get the support they need without navigating long specialist queues. The hope is that more New Zealanders will be able to access life‑changing treatment earlier, rather than waiting months (or even years) for a psychiatrist appointment.
