Anyone regularly affected by hayfever understands it’s more than just a nuisance, but often a miserable imposition on sleep, leisure time, and performance at work or school.

Around 20% of New Zealanders suffer from allergic rhinitis or ‘hayfever’, usually brought on    by pollen from grasses, weeds or trees, and in some cases by year-round triggers such as dust mites, animal dander (skin flakes), feathers or mould.1

Symptoms include sneezing, an itchy, blocked nose and sensitive, watery eyes. Depending on its severity, a hayfever bout can wipe out your morning as you wade through a box of tissues and productivity comes to a standstill.

WHAT HAPPENS WITH ALLERGY?
An allergy is simply your immune system over-reacting to normally harmless substances found in the environment.

Once you’re exposed to an allergy trigger such as pollen, mast cells inside your nose release powerful chemical mediators, such as histamine, which bring on the symptoms of hayfever.

HOW TO PREVENT ALLERGIES?
It pays to avoid the triggers that set you off. But it’s not always possible to keep pollen out of your home over spring and summer, or to avoid a cat or dog, especially when visiting people who have furry friends.

That’s why hayfever treatments are a necessity for many allergy sufferers. But, because different formulations work in different ways, results will vary between different medicines.

If your aim is to forget about allergies and be free of the daily torment of hayfever, you should consider an intranasal corticosteroid spray, such as Flixonase, which not only relieves the symptoms of hayfever but can prevent them occurring in the first place.

PREVENT ALLERGIES WITH FLIXONASE
The nasal spray Flixonase works differently to an antihistamine tablet.

An antihistamine tablet blocks the action of ‘histamine’ after it’s been released, and helps relieve the symptoms of hayfever but will do nothing to prevent it.

Flixonase, on the other hand, suppresses the production of the chemicals (such as histamine), that cause the allergic response, helping both relieve the symptoms of hayfever and prevent them recurring when used regularly.
