Summer fun is just around the corner, and you can have your share without risking your skin and raising the odds of getting skin cancer.Like most Kiwis, you probably can’t wait to slip into your jandals and head to the beach, the cricket pitch or just the backyard for a dose of summer goodness. It only takes minutes for skin to burn – we’ve all experienced it – and we now know that repeat and cumulative bouts of sunburn are the leading cause of melanoma and other skin cancers.
RISK FACTORS FOR SKIN CANCERSunburn and the following factors can increase the risk of melanoma and other
skin cancers…
- Fair skin
- One or more severe sunburns – especially in childhood.
- Large numbers of moles
- Large, irregularly-shaped and unevenly coloured moles called atypical or dysplastic naevi
- A personal or family history of melanoma.
