Throughout history tinea has been a misunderstood condition.WHAT IS TINEA?Tinea is the condition caused by a type of mould-like fungi called a dermatophyte, literally meaning “skin plant”, that can infect the skin on practically any part of your body. Like most fungi dermatophytes prefer a warm and moist environment. That’s why the feet and groin are commonly affected.
SYMPTOMS OF TINEASymptoms of tinea infections usually occur within 4 to 10 days of contact and can include: redness, itching, burning, stinging, a rash that may form blisters or pustules, or raw inflamed or scaly skin, and in more severe cases: weeping or oozing lesions.
TYPES OF TINEA:Athletes Foot (tinea pedis) Tinea between the toes is called tinea pedis or commonly Athlete’s Foot, a term popularised by an American liniment manufacturer’s advertising back in the 1930s. Here the fungi infect the skin between and under the toes.
Ringworm (tinea corporis)When tinea is present on most other parts of our body it’s generally called tinea corporis or commonly Ringworm. In ancient times people thought the infection was due to a worm infestation, which led to the condition being called Ringworm.
Many thought that Ringworm infections looked like the holes made in clothes by moths. In the Middle Ages physicians began calling the infection tinea, the name of a common family of clothes moths. In 1837 the true cause of Ringworm was found and subsequently proved that the condition was actually a fungal infection.
Jock Itch (tinea cruris)Tinea cruris or Jock Itch is more common in men and affects the groin area – especially the creases in the upper thigh. Chaffing often exacerbates the condition.
HOW IS TINEA CONTRACTED?Tinea is contagious. It can be easily contracted through skin-to-skin contact with an infected person or animal, or through contact with an object or surface that an infected person or animal has touched. Showers and change rooms, swimming pool decks and wet towels provide an ideal way for the fungi infection tinea to be transmitted from one person to another.
