Did you know that the pain and discomfort of a sore throat is usually caused by inflammation? If this is the case then getting to the root cause of pain begins with anti-inflammatory treatment.

Inflammation in the mouth and throat can make it difficult to eat, sleep, swallow and generally carry out your daily activities. The sooner you treat it, the sooner you’ll find relief from throat and mouth pain.

WHAT IS INFLAMMATION?
Inflammation is the body’s natural defence against infection, irritation or injury.  Damaged or infected cells produce chemicals that stimulate your immune system ready to defend you. These chemicals cause the five signs
of inflammation:
  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Heat
  • Redness
  • Loss of function, such as losing your voice.

TRIGGERS FOR THROAT AND MOUTH PAIN
A viral infection, such as a cold or the flu, is responsible for sore throats in 85-90% of adults and in 70% of children aged 6-16. A runny nose causes mucus to trickle down the back of the nose to the throat where it causes further irritation.

Bacterial infections can also cause sore throat and we have all heard of the term “strep throat” which is an infection with Streptococcus.

Irritation due to dust, smoke, fumes or abrasive chemicals, plus chronic coughing and shouting can also make your throat sore.

These are all triggers for a sore throat but what they all have in common is inflammation and if you don’t treat the source of the pain early, it will only get worse!
