Brushing only cleans 60% of your teeth’s surface, so for proper oral health, it’s important to also floss.

You’ll already know you should floss your teeth, but you probably underestimate the reasons why.

The fact is brushing alone doesn’t remove all the plaque from your teeth, which can lead to dental decay and bad breath. It only takes between 24-36 hours for plaque to harden into the more difficult to remove tartar, which in turn can cause gum disease.

WHAT IS GUM DISEASE?
Bleeding gums are often the first sign of gum disease, and plaque build-up is usually to blame.

Plaque is a substance created by saliva, mucus, food particles and bacteria that stick to teeth.

If plaque isn’t regularly removed from teeth by regular brushing and flossing, it hardens into tartar and builds up around the gum line, causing gums to become swollen and inflamed.

DID YOU KNOW?
Around 80% of New Zealanders over the age of 15 have some form of gum disease, which can cause bad breath and, in its advanced form, is a leading cause of tooth loss amongst adults over 35.*

NEW REACH® CLEAN PASTE FLOSS
Reach Clean Paste Floss is the first and only floss infused with a fresh toothpaste-like formula that cleans between your teeth, removing up to 40% of plaque.

It leaves your mouth feeling fresh and unmistakably clean. What’s more, its unique fibres are gentle on gums, making flossing a pleasant daily exercise.

FLOSSING OPTIONS
Reach Clean Paste Floss comes in a floss canister and the distinctive Access Daily Flosser.

With its toothbrush style handle and replaceable snap-on floss heads, the Access Daily Flosser makes flossing easy. And because it can sit right beside your toothbrush, remembering to floss won’t be a problem.

COMMON FLOSSING MISCONCEPTIONS
  • I don’t need to floss every day. Plaque accumulation occurs quite quickly. In fact it only takes 24 to 36 hours for plaque to harden into the more difficult-to-remove tartar. Flossing every second day therefore isn’t nearly as effective as daily flossing.
  • If I can’t see anything stuck in my teeth, there’s no need to floss. Flossing is not just about removing food particles from between your teeth. Its primary function is to remove plaque from between your teeth and around the gum line (where your toothbrush can’t reach).
  • Fossing is just a quick up-down. Flossing isn’t just an up and down motion. You need to wipe the floss against the sides of every tooth, base to tip, so that it cleans under the gum line as well as between the teeth.
