Good nutrition is widely recognised as the key to good health, but the demands of a busy lifestyle can men you're skipping meals or not eating as well as you should.
For many people, life is too busy to eat the right mix of foods every day.
Subsequently, many New Zealanders aren’t getting all the nutrients they need.
Statistics show the average Kiwi diet is high in salt and low in iodine, and women
aged 25 and over are consuming only half the recommended daily intake of iron.
WHAT IS A BALANCED DIET ANYWAY?Eating a balanced diet these days is trickier than ever, now that the long established Food Pyramid is out of vogue and foods that were once considered all-bad are now considered part-good.
But according to the Ministry of Health’s Food and Nutrition Guidelines for Healthy Adults (2003), this is what you should aim to eat everyday:
- At least five servings of vegetabes and fruits. These provide carbohydrates, fibre, vitamins (especially A & C) and minerals, and are low in fat.
- At least six servings of breads and cereals (try and choose wholegrain). These provide protein, carbohydrates, fibre, vitamins (mainly B & E) and minerals.
- At least two servings of milk or milk products (choose low or reduced fat). These provide protein, fats (mainly undesirable saturated fats), vitamins (riboflavin, B12 & A) and minerals (especially calcium, phosphorous, zinc and iodine).
- At last one serving of lean meat, poultry, chicken, seafood, eggs, legumes, or nuts and seeds. For protein, vitamins (B12, niacin, thiamine) and minerals (iron, zinc, magnesium, copper, potassium, phosphorous and selenium). Seafood, nuts and seeds contain ‘mainly' unsaturated fats whereas meat generally contains more saturated fat.
THE IMPACT OF DIETNot eating well ultimately results in lower energy and reduced vitality – exactly what you can’t afford when you lead a busy life.
If you want to maintain your up-and-go and prevent burnout over winter, you could consider topping up your diet with a multivitamin supplement.
