For many parts of the country, this summer saw an unusually high number of unwelcome fleas. Even a few fleas left unchecked can have a huge flow-on effect for the following spring and summer.

Fleas are more visible over summer, but they do continue to breed in your pet’s environment all year round. Animals left untreated over winter allow fleas in their developing stages to infest carpets, bedding and outdoor areas where pets run around.

Pupae can survive for over six months before hatching and there can be a huge build-up of pupae numbers over winter without anyone knowing it!

If you only treat your pets over summer, the build-up in winter of an environmental infestation (in carpets and bedding) will take between four to twelve weeks to clear up once you start treating again (as the warmer weather returns and the pupae start to hatch).

THE FLEA LIFE CYCLE
The fleas on your pet represent only 5% of the total flea population at any given time – the other 95% are fleas in their developing stages.

One flea today can result in 760 fleas in a month and over one and a half million fleas in two months.

FLEA FACTS
  • Flea eggs hatch as larvae, which develop into pupae that can survive for up to six months in the environment
  • It’s vital to destroy both adult fleas and their immature forms to prevent a future flea explosion
  • By the time you see fleas on your pet, an environmental infestation already exists.
