There’s still plenty of time to kick off your shoes and enjoy the warmer weather, but just be careful where you tread! While the sun’s still out you’ll want to make the most of the beach and the great outdoors, but being barefoot and fancy-free can spell trouble for your feet.
The fungus that causes athlete’s foot is contagious and can easily get under your skin. Once infected it can be difficult to treat.
The fungus is commonly contracted through skin-to-skin contact with an infected person or contact with a surface or object that an infected person has touched. Communal bathing, swimming, showers and changing room areas are common sources of the infection.
ABOUT ATHLETE'S FOOTLike most fungi, the athlete’s foot fungus thrives in warm, damp environments. For this reason infections are most common on the feet and particularly between the toes. As a result your skin can become red or itchy, with areas of peeling, scaling
or cracking.
SIGNS OF ATHLETE'S FOOTYou might be infected if you have any of the following signs:
- Itching or burning between your toes.
- Red or white areas of scaling or cracking between your toes.
- White, soggy skin between your toes.
- Persistent dry, cracked, scaly skin on your soles (moccasin-type).
IMPORTANT TO TREATWhile it’s hard to ignore athlete’s foot given the itching and frustration it can cause, it is important to treat it as soon as it appears. Left untreated the infection can spread to other parts of the body and/or to other people.
