Worms are a common childhood problem, often picked up at school or playgroups where kids play closely together sharing toys or equipment.Worms are nothing to be embarrassed about – it’s estimated up to 20% of under 10 year olds have threadworm at any one time
1.
Because threadworm is highly contagious, schools and kindergartens are the ideal breeding grounds for worms to spread. Threadworm is commonly caught through touching contaminated surfaces, such as door handles, taps and toys, and then touching your mouth or handling food.
COMMON SYMPTOMS OF WORMSThe most common symptoms of threadworm are:
- Itchy bottom (especially at night)
- Irritability
- Restlessness
- Loss of appetite.
For definitive proof of threadworm infection look for the following:
- Worms on the outside of bowel motions
- Worms and/or their eggs around the anal area – about an hour after the child has gone to bed. Using a torch, worms or threadworm eggs should be visible.
