» Nappy Rash

Nappy rash is part of growing up, but it can be unsettling for both babies and mums.

Many infants suffer from nappy rash at some time, no matter how diligently their nappies are changed.

Nappy rash is usually limited to the area covered by the nappy; the skin may look red and moist for a couple of days, and can sometimes blister and peel.

WHAT CAUSES NAPPY RASH?
Nappy rash occurs when there is prolonged contact of the skin with a mixture of urine and faeces; skin exposed to wetness or moisture leads to softening of the skin making it more susceptible to damage by friction and local irritants.1
Your baby can also be vulnerable to nappy rash if they’re taking medicines, have an upset tummy or a change of diet (particularly during weaning).

PREVENTION TIPS
There are steps you can take to reduce the risk of nappy rash…
  • Change the nappy often to minimise skin exposure to urine and faeces
  • Wash your baby’s bottom thoroughly with warm water and cotton wool after changing, and pat the skin dry rather than rubbing
  • Whenever possible, leave your baby without a nappy so the nappy area can dry thoroughly
  • Avoid plastic pants and tight clothes as they stop air from circulating
  • Use a protective ointment such as Bepanthen Ointment at every nappy change to reinforce the skin’s natural barrier against irritation.

BEPANTHEN OINTMENT
Bepanthen is clinically proven to heal and soothe nappy rash.2
It has a unique formula with Dexpanthenol (Pro Vitamin B5), which forms a waterproof barrier that still lets baby’s delicate skin breathe. This thin protective barrier offers an advantage over thicker ointments, as it helps accelerate the skin’s natural healing process.

KEY DIFFERENCES
Unlike other treatments, Bepanthen does not use thick zinc and castor oil based formulations, which are very difficult to remove – this may result in further frictional damage to skin.

Bepanthen is gentle, soothing and suitable for baby’s sensitive skin – it’s also fragrance, preservative and colour-free.

What’s more, Bepanthen Ointment doesn’t need to be removed after each nappy change, therefore preventing abrasive rubbing of baby’s skin. Simply apply a thin layer of Bepanthen Ointment to your baby’s clean, dry bottom.
