Cuts, scrapes, burns and bites are an inevitable part of growing up. Letting your child be adventurous and independent doesn’t have to be stressful with the back-up of a gentle first-aid treatment.
Minor wounds are a major drama to children at the time. Most kids run to mum then forget all about it, but keeping an antiseptic cream in the house is essential for those times when a simple hug won’t do.
COMMON COMPLAINTS
Cuts and grazes – You probably still remember what it felt like to fall off a bike and graze yourself. What happens is the top layers of the skin get damaged and small blood vessels break. Surface wounds often feel, and look, worse than they are.
Burns – Minor burns are part of discovering what ‘hot’ means, whether from objects, liquid or steam. If only the outer layer of skin is burnt, the wound may not blister but can still feel painful. If a burn blisters, it’s because the inside layer (the dermis) is also damaged.
Bites – Mosquitoes, before they suck blood, inject a mild painkiller, saliva and anti-coagulants. Our immune systems react to proteins in the saliva, causing the ‘bite’ to swell and itch. Flea bites itch for the same reason.
TREATING MINOR WOUNDS
Before treating a graze or scrape, wash your own hands first so you don’t infect the wound through the broken skin. Then wash the wound in clean water to remove any gravel or dirt. Pat the skin dry gently.
For a burn, immediately cool the hot skin by holding it under a running cold tap for about 20 minutes.
Whether you’re dealing with a cut, graze, burn or bite, the next step is to apply a healing antiseptic cream.
WHAT IS BEPANTHEN FIRST AID?
Bepanthen First Aid is a new antiseptic cream formulated not to sting. It’s soothing, fast-acting and effective, but gentle on sensitive skin.
Bepanthen First Aid is even effective if used in the presence of debris, that may be too painful to wash out.
Available over the counter at your pharmacy, Bepanthen First Aid has two main ingredients. The first is an antiseptic that effectively kills germs and bacteria (chlorhexidine hydrochloride) which can cause infection; it’s the same antiseptic most widely used in hospitals and by doctors. The second is proVitamin B5 (dexpanthenol), which accelerates the skin’s natural healing process.
Treating infected wounds Bepanthen First Aid is also effective for treating minor wounds that become infected. Skin that weeps fluid, or swelling around
the wound, are tell-tale signs of infection.
Apply the cream immediately and leave the skin exposed to air so it can breathe.
