If you’re keen on winter sports and won’t allow the cold and rain to hold you back, the last thing you’ll want is for a sports injury to stop you in your tracks.Acute injuries can occur when muscles or tendons are stretched too far, as a result of ‘overdoing it’ or simply using muscles that haven’t been exercised in a while.
Whether hitting the snow or the rugby field this winter, try and build up some fitness beforehand so that your body is more flexible and prepared.
And always do a warm-up first, especially as muscles, tendons and ligaments are colder over winter, making them more prone to injury.
WARM UP BY STRETCHINGStretching can help loosen and flex the muscles, and get blood flowing where it’s needed.
Different sports and activities use different muscle groups, so focus on stretching the muscle groups that you are most likely to use.
MANAGING SPORTS INJURIESIf you do suffer an injury, tending to it quickly and relieving the pain is the key to keeping you moving.
If you get a sprain or strain, follow the RICER method (rest, ice, compression, elevation, referral) for the first 48 hours after injury. And ask your pharmacist for advice on medicines to reduce pain and assist recovery.
TIPS ON STRETCHING- Start slowly. Stretching too hard too quickly can lead to unwanted injuries, especially when muscles are cold.
- Hold each stretch for at least 30 seconds. It takes time to stretch your muscles safely. Remember to breathe during each stretch – never hold your breath.
- Make sure you also stretch after exercise. During a warm-down you’ll find your muscles are easier to stretch.
- Do not bounce. This can lead to muscle trauma and scar tissue, all of which actually tightens the muscle. Tight muscles have an increased risk of injury.
