Bladder control is taken for granted by most people. But for some, bladder weakness means their bladder becomes the boss, affecting their activities and enjoyment of life. The good news is it doesn’t have to be that way.

For more than 600,000 New Zealanders, both women and men, bladder or bowel control problems are a fact of life. They can occur as a result of an underlying medical condition or physical changes to the body.

Although bladder and bowel weakness is more common in the elderly, it can affect anyone at any age. It’s important to remember bladder and bowel control problems are symptoms, not diseases. They can often be cured and almost always successfully managed.

COMMON CAUSES OF BLADDER WEAKNESS
  • Pregnancy and childbirth
  • Urinary infections
  • Diabetes
  • Prostate gland surgery
  • Menopause
  • Neurological disease or injury (Parkinson’s, stroke or spinal cord injury)
  • Chronic constipation
  • Obesity.

Regardless of the cause, and the degree of weakness, you just want to manage your bossy bladder so you can continue living your life, participating in activities you enjoy and getting out and about as normal.

Pelvic floor exercises and bladder training programmes can help strengthen the muscles in the pelvic area so you can hold on longer between toilet visits.

The key in managing the problem comes from the right protection, whether the weakness results in a few light drops when sneezing or coughing, or a more significant loss requiring a change of underwear or clothes.
