As you grow older, your independence tends to become more and more precious.

It’s not surprising if you, or an elderly member of your family, choose to continue living at home for as long as possible – even if alone. But it helps to know that if you should fall or need urgent medical help, expert assistance will be available fast.

FALLS AND THE ELDERLY
It’s a fact that falls are a major issue for the elderly. New Zealanders aged 65 and over have a one in three chance of falling this year. Those aged 80 or over have a one in two chance.1 We also know that among older adults, falls are the leading cause of injury-related deaths and non-fatal admission for trauma in hospitals.2
Worrying about a possible fall or a medical problem can take away some of the enjoyment of living alone. It can also make relatives anxious, when what they really want is to feel secure that their loved ones are safe and happy.

HELP AT HAND
Many New Zealanders have taken positive steps to deal with their concerns by turning to a St John Lifelink medical alarm.

Having an alarm can make you feel more in control and help improve your quality of life. You can feel safe and secure in the knowledge that if something goes wrong, professional assistance is close at hand.

ST JOHN LIFELINK MEDICAL ALARM
St John Lifelink medical alarms are preferred by many New Zealanders because the alarms are connected directly to St John ambulance communications centres, so when the alarm is activated your call goes straight to St John. This makes St John Lifelink alarms unique.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
If you have a fall or a medical emergency at home, you only have to press on the St John Lifelink pendant or wristband for help. You’ll be called to find out what’s wrong and if needed the trained staff at the St John ambulance communications centres will send an ambulance. If the alarm user doesn’t respond to the call, an ambulance will be sent.

Getting a St John Lifelink medical alarm may be easier and much cheaper than you think. Many New Zealanders qualify for funding through Work and Income. St John is a Work and Income approved supplier of monitored medical alarms and can help you through the application process.
