Indigestion, heartburn and reflux can strike anywhere at any time, especially if you’re under stress, eating on the go, or eating highly acidic foods.

Indigestion is an uncomfortable, burning feeling in the chest or stomach that’s often associated with bloating, belching and flatulence.

Heartburn is one of the most common symptoms, occurring when stomach acids ‘splash’ upwards into the oesophagus (the pipe that carries chewed food from your mouth to your stomach), causing irritation and, sometimes, pain. This backwash can be the result of excess stomach acids being produced, often as a result of eating fatty foods or highly acidic foods, such as tomatoes and tomato products or citrus fruits and juices.

Some foods also weaken the oesophageal muscle which acts like a valve at the top of the stomach designed to keep food and acids in the stomach, preventing them washing back up. Foods that may cause this muscle to relax or weaken include chocolate and caffeinated drinks such as coffee, tea and cola.

HOW TO AVOID HEARTBURN
  • Don’t overeat: A simple equation to remember is that the more food you eat, the more stomach acid you’ll produce to help digest that food. And, more stomach acid means more chance of heartburn and indigestion.
  • Don’t eat on the run: Eating too quickly and not chewing your food completely can also cause heartburn.
  • Don’t stress: Stress can alter your body’s normal nerve impulses and hormone signals, which can result in acid indigestion and other digestive health problems such as diarrhoea and stomach aches.

WHAT IS MYLANTA?
Mylanta is a range of products that provide relief from indigestion, heartburn, upset stomach, flatulence and wind pain.

Mylanta products contain a number of ingredients, which all act in different ways to relieve the symptoms of indigestion.
  • Antacids neutralise acid in the stomach so, if reflux occurs, it doesn’t damage the oesophagus (the pipe that carries chewed food from your mouth to your stomach).
  • Alginates form a ‘raft’ on the top of the stomach contents, which helps prevent acid rising into the oesophagus.
  • Simethicone helps bubbles in the stomach join together so that gas is more readily passed from the body.
