Thanks to increases in technology and better lifestyle choices, 30 is the new 20, 45 is the new ‘middle age’, and subsequently old age is kicking in at around 75 years!
It’s exciting to see how there has been an upsurge in positivity around the later life years with many people openly rejecting the notion of ‘anti-aging’ medicines, surgeries, make-up and elixirs, opting for products and people who embrace the concept of ‘pro-age’. This notion challenges us to love ourselves, wrinkles n’ all.
For many years, we have been deluged with stories and statistics outlining the ever-decreasing benefits of aging. For example, activity levels have been shown to decrease with age. Similarly, social interactions and friendships diminish and overall energy levels decrease as a function of older age. As you can see this information is not very motivating and given that we are part of a rapidly aging society, where by the year 2020 almost half of us will be over 50, you mightn’t be blamed for just taking to your bed and giving up! But lying around and giving up is the clear opposite to what you should be doing as you age!
We tend to assume that the benefits and pleasures of taking care of ourselves, playing sport, exercising and keeping healthy are for the young. But think again. The pro-age pundits believe that improved fitness, high levels of activity and continued social interaction in later life, brings both health and social rewards. Regular activity is especially important as you age because it can counter the onset of conditions such as diabetes, obesity and heart disease, while helping you maintain mobility, muscle and joint flexibility. Consequently, your independence and general happiness will reap the benefits! Just look at the older sports enthusiasts in their 50s and 60s whose fitness levels and general ‘joie de vivre’ puts people 20, 30 or even 40 years younger to shame!
Embracing your age also means saying an emphatic “NO” to surgery to attain that youthful glow. Nips, tucks and chemical peels are now being discarded for laugh lines and other quirky imperfections. Even the Hollywood glitterati, who often lead the way in terms of surgery ‘for art’s sake’ are standing up for natural aging beauty. The likes of Julia Roberts, Halle Berry and many other A-list stars who have hit their 40s are proving to be the highest profile Pro-Age campaigners!
So here’s to the pro-age trend which will allow us to keep active, feel great about ourselves and family and friends, and still look in the mirror and smile at the image before us: wrinkled, wise and wonderful!
